Altitude is the first thing to sort out when picking a Mount Etna tour from Taormina. The height decides what you see, how cold it gets, and whether an alpine guide walks with you.
The listings split cleanly by height. The half-day tours hike around the extinct craters near Rifugio Sapienza at 1,900-2,000 m. The north slope day tops out at about 1,775 m at the Sartorius craters.
The cable car lifts anyone to 2,500 m, and the guided 4x4 package reaches 2,750 m. Only the SAT Group tours with a CAI alpine guide get to 2,800-2,900 m, the authorised upper crater zone.

Not below about 2,500 m. Free access without a guide is generally allowed up to that line, which is why the half-day tours can walk the extinct craters on their own. Above about 2,500 m, in the summit crater zone, you must go with an authorised volcanological or alpine guide. The rules come from municipal ordinances in Nicolosi, Linguaglossa and Castiglione di Sicilia, not one regional decree.
The summit area can also close on the day. Etna has alert levels F0, F1 and F2 for lava fountains, and on escalation the summit activities are suspended automatically. So even a booked 4x4 tour to 2,900 m can be turned around. Etna itself is about 3,350-3,400 m and changing: INGV measured 3,357 m in 2021 and 3,369 m at the Voragine crater in 2024, and the listings disagree. More on this in the summit craters guide.

Half-day morning tours are the cheapest way up, with 5 to 7 hours door to door. Sunset tours swap the morning for an afternoon van and golden light on the craters. The summit 4x4 tours add a coach leg and a jeep with an alpine guide.
Full days split the day between Etna and the Alcantara Gorges, a winery, or both.

Taormina to Rifugio Sapienza on the south side is 55.4 km, about 65 minutes by car with no traffic. The group tour listings budget about 1.5 hours each way, and the private driver listing says 75 minutes, so plan on those. The sources conflict: the routing figure ignores traffic, pickups and the slow mountain road. The north side is closer: 46.9 km to Piano Provenzana, about 56 minutes with no traffic.
Most tours pick you up at your hotel in Taormina or Giardini Naxos. The exceptions are the SAT Group tours, which leave from the Taormina bus terminal on Via Luigi Pirandello, and the north slope day, which uses ten fixed meeting points in Taormina, Giardini Naxos and Giarre-Riposto. If you would rather skip the van entirely, the getting there yourself guide covers car and bus, though there is no direct bus from Taormina.
The listing price rarely covers everything at Rifugio Sapienza. These are the extras you can meet on the day, converted at the European Central Bank reference rate of 1 EUR = 1.1403 USD.

The cable car climbs from Rifugio Sapienza at 1,900 m to 2,500 m. Return only, it costs EUR 54 ($61.58): you get the view and the colder air, but no guide and no access above the top station. For EUR 78 ($88.94) the cable car, a 4x4 Unimog and a guide take you on to 2,750 m, the simplest way for an independent visitor to go above the 2,500 m line.
From Taormina, the upper craters day packages the coach, the 4x4 ascent and a CAI alpine guide to about 2,900 m for $137. If the summit zone is the point of your trip, that beats driving up and buying the ticket at the desk. If you only want a look from 2,500 m, the ticket alone is enough. The half-day tours do not go near the summit, but they walk real volcanic features. Here is what each route actually puts in front of you.

On the south side, the half-day tours hike among the extinct craters by Rifugio Sapienza at about 1,910-2,000 m. Two listings add the Grotta dei Tre Livelli, a lava cave you enter with a helmet and headlamp for about 30 minutes: the hiking and tastings tour and the sunset tour. The jeep day crosses lava flows to a hotel buried by lava, shepherds' caves and the Silvestri Craters, about 45 minutes at each stop. The Silvestri Craters formed in the 1892 eruption and charge EUR 5 ($5.70) since October 2025.
The north slope tells a different story. The north slope day drives off-road to the 2002 lava front, which destroyed the Piano Provenzana ski facilities and part of the Ragabo pine forest. The ruins of the Le Betulle hotel are the only building left standing from that flow. The tour then hikes 3 km from 1,665 m to about 1,775 m along the Monti Sartorius craters and enters the Grotta dei Ladroni, which has 1776 carved over its entrance. The private 4x4 tour adds a long lava tunnel and a view over the Valle del Bove at your own pace.
You can reach Etna from Taormina without a booking. The trade is time and logistics for freedom on the mountain.

Rifugio Sapienza on the south side is 55.4 km from Taormina, about 65 minutes by car with no traffic. A routing engine gives that figure, and tour listings budget about 1.5 hours each way for the same road, so allow extra in summer. Parking at Rifugio Sapienza is paid.
From the car park you can walk the Silvestri Craters for EUR 5 ($5.70), or buy the cable car alone for EUR 54 ($61.58) return, or the cable car with 4x4 and guide for EUR 78 ($88.94). There is no direct bus from Taormina to Mount Etna. You first ride Interbus to Catania, 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 55 minutes, with a first weekday bus at 6:30. From Catania the AST bus leaves Piazza Giovanni XXIII once a day at 08:15 and returns from Rifugio Sapienza at 16:30, EUR 6.60 return ($7.53).
It does not run on 25 December, 1 January, 1 May, 15 August or Easter Sunday. That means catching the 6:30 Interbus, about 6 hours on the mountain, and a 13-hour day overall with no second bus if the one is full.

The Motta Camastra entrance is 20.9 km from Taormina, about 28 minutes by car. The public municipal entrance is a staircase of about 200 to 250 steps with no lift, EUR 2 per person ($2.28), open roughly April to October. The river water stays about 10 to 15 C all year, even in August, so a swim is short.

The Etna North Slope and Alcantara Gorges Full-Day Tour with Lunch spends about an hour inside the gorge through the municipal entrance, entry included, and swimming is allowed. It also reaches about 1,775 m on Etna's quieter north slope with a 3 km crater hike and a lava cave, for $101. The Full-Day Etna, Wine and Alcantara Canyons Tour from Taormina instead sees the canyons from a panoramic viewpoint only, and puts its mountain time into a 2-hour hike at 2,000 m plus lunch and wine at a winery, for $154.
If getting wet matters, pick the first. If wine matters more, pick the second.
The mountain sets its own rules on clothing and access. Both are predictable if you know the numbers.

Temperature drops about 6 to 10 C for every 1,000 m you climb. At 2,500 m it can be 15 to 20 C colder than Taormina, even in August. Snow sits on the upper mountain usually November to April.
Dress in layers and bring a windproof jacket. Closed shoes are the standard advice, and open shoes are refused on several tour listings. What the tours rent or lend varies: Etna People includes boots, jacket and walking stick at no extra cost, the Kemedia tours bring helmet and headlamp for the cave and lend trekking shoes on request by the day before, and the SAT Group tours rent boots and jackets on site at extra cost.
