There is no direct bus from Taormina to Mount Etna, and the connection makes this the hardest option of the four.
How the Route Works
The chain has two legs. First an Interbus from Taormina to Catania, about 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 55 minutes, with the first weekday bus at 6:30. Then the AST bus from Catania to the mountain.
AST runs ONE bus a day from Piazza Giovanni XXIII by the station to Rifugio Sapienza, leaving at 08:15 and arriving about 10:15, and returning from Rifugio Sapienza at 16:30 to reach Catania about 18:30. The return fare is EUR 6.60 ($7.53).
The 13-Hour Day
To make the 08:15 AST bus you must catch the 6:30 Interbus from Taormina. That puts you on the mountain at about 10:15, gives you roughly 6 hours at Rifugio Sapienza, and gets you back to Taormina after a 13-hour day. There is no second bus if one leg is full or late, and a delay on the way up costs you the whole day.
